I spend a lot of time during my work day watching videos from Netflix on my computer. I admit I’m lucky to be in a position where I can work unsupervised most of the day and the truth is the background noise actually makes me work faster, not slower. Anyway, if it makes me a fuck off, so be it. I found it’s the only way I can make a dent in my absurdly long Netflix queue.
I prefer TV shows at work because they require much less of my attention than movies. You have to focus on movies and that does distract from my work. Forget foreign films, those are impossible to watch while working. I feel like I’ve been through the DVD’s of all of the good shows on today, so I’m having to go back in time to find stuff I want to watch. Most recently I’ve started season one of I Love Lucy. I don’t think I’ve seen an episode of these shows in 25 years. Here are some things I noticed about the show.
- Lucy is way more doable than I remember.
- Ethel is way less doable than I remember (if that’s even possible)
- Ricky is way cooler than I thought. Even though I hear people say this about him, I never remembered it that way
- Fred is really fat and old, seemingly too fat and old to score a chic like Ethel (as undoable as she is)
- Lucy is much funnier to me as an adult than when I was a kid
- I’ve been through about the first 10 episodes so far and I’ve not heard even one “Babaloo”
- Lucy and Ethel were pretty big cry-babies
- No one on the show is very smart
- They sure smoked a lot

If your work product is not compromised and management has not made an issue of your viewing, then you are not a total fuck off.
Your perspective of the Lucy shows is right on.
Crail – I’ll pass on your words of support to management
Funny, because I don’t even remember noticing they were smoking. I guess because when I was watching, it was normal.
I agree with you about being able to appreciate Lucy now that we’re older. I would imagine there’s a sliding scale defined by age — with “I Love Lucy” at one extreme and “Knight Rider” at the other. As one gets older, Lucy becomes more appealing while the talking car fades into obscure boredom.
As for smoking in TV and movies — it’s interesting even to see movies and TV from the 80s which have a lot of smoking in them compared to today’s media. I suppose it was a gradual fade out…
Gwen – they are chimneys on that show.
Shiny – Kit is still bad ass. The Hoff on the other hand? Not so much.
othurme – man, i think i wanna switch jobs for a week! (just not this week.)
shiny – who are you kidding, you still have the hots for that talking car. MUCH more than you do for lucy…
Hello – THAT FUCKING SUCKS! I totally would have traded this week.
Curious.
Why is Ethel not doable? Is it cuz she is fatter than Lucy? Or just not as attractive, or is it her personality? I don’t want to judge prematurely.
Fun fact:
Ethel had, in her contract, that she had to be X # of pounds heavier than Lucille Ball. Interesting.
Abs – I can’t really put a finger on it (that’s what she said). It’s definitely not the weight, though. Fred manages to make every one look like Ethiopian children every time he walks on screen.
I’m a total fuck off too. I can’t believe I haven’t been fired yet.
I only remember that one episode where Lucy worked at the pie factory with the conveyor belt. Felt like a 3 Stooges rip off to me.
Franki – I can totally write you a letter of recommendation for your next job if your current employer refuses to. Let me know.
Such a giver.
ricky’s a fox
Franki – It’s the least I can do
Margaret – I guess. If you’re into that whole “Cuban tobacco farmer makes good for himself as a singer in the US” thing. Which I’m not.
